Seniors Citizens
The Glanmire Seniors Tuesday club was started in 1984 to meet the social needs of the seniors in the greater Glanmire area at that time. Some of the events included day trips to Bantry, Kilkenny, Killarney, Goughan Barra to mention a few.
We also enjoyed 3 day hotel breaks to Galway and Killarney and Youghal as well as the annual trip to Trabolgan arranged by the Lions club. The date for this year’s trip is 6th to the 13th June. Every year we take part in the over 60s talent competition.
The local heat for this year took place in sars pavillion at the end of Feb it was a very enjoyable night with 5 contestants taking part. The winner was Barry Looney from Meadowbrook who will go on to represent Glanmire in the city hall on the 27th April. We wish Barry every success.
Every Tuesday from 2pm to 4pm the group meets and do light exercise before a cup of tea and a chat. Some weeks we do knitting or crochet and have a game of bingo. Each term the VEC allocates a teacher to do painting and crafts which the group enjoys very much for about 6 weeks.
Every fortnight the chiropodist visits the centre and this is made possible by a grant from the H.S.E. this service is available to any seniors in the area by appointment. Contact 086 1948584 or the GACA office 021 4821333.
In March 2012 another group started in the area and meet on Tue morning. This group is affiliated to Active retirement Ireland and have a very busy and interesting programme planned each month Tom Byrne is the chairman 085 1145045.
